William Wharton had three great grandsons, who were also nephews (by marriage) of Edward Chandler. All three fought in the First World War.
Captain Aubrey Fitzgerald Wharton (1890-1958)
Fought with the 1/5th Hampshire Regiment in India in WW1 and was awarded the India General Service Medal, with clasp for the North-West Frontier, which is in the medal case.
Captain Eric Fitzgerald Wharton (1891 – 1962)
Joined the Royal Navy as a Midshipman in 1909 and fought at the Battle of Jutland as a Lieut. Gunnery Officer aboard HMS Erin. He re-joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and was promoted to Captain responsible for organising the fleet of ‘Little Ships’ at Dunkirk.
Lieutenant Guy Fitzgerald Wharton (1894- 1915)
Joined Durham Light Infantry in 1914. He was wounded at Verlorenhoek on 8th May 1915 while serving with 1st Batt. King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and died of his wounds.
